Action camp 2024

In Pernis, a  village within the Port of Rotterdam, the four-day Geef Tegengas action camp marked the collective’s first public action. Around 300 activists from across Europe gathered with a shared goal: to resist the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and to stand in explicit solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle - through direct action, workshops, and political education.

Throughout the camp, several actions took place. Scientist Rebellion and XR Healthcare Professionals opened with a blockade of Yara’s fertilizer factory - the largest gas consumer in the Netherlands. In Rotterdam, activists used a giant projector to expose Shell’s role in LNG expansion. The grand finale was a full-day blockade of the Botlek Bridge, halting all freight and shipping traffic to and from the Port of Rotterdam. These actions not only exposed the deadly and hidden costs of LNG but also directly disrupted the corporations complicit in fueling climate chaos and destruction.

Actions

The camp featured sessions on LNG, its ties to Palestine, and the broader social and ecological consequences of gas extraction. Topics included forced migration, militarization, and the connections between fossil fuels and war. These workshops deepened the movement’s knowledge and sharpened its analysis. Creative sessions and action trainings prepared participants to take direct action together.

Trainings and workshops

The Geef Tegengas action camp was a great success: it disrupted the infrastructure of fossil imperialism, strengthened the movement against LNG, and forged clear links with the Palestinian struggle. It also marked the birth of Geef Tegengas as an independent and autonomous action group - an indispensable force in the fight against climate chaos and colonial violence.
